HELPING TO CLEAN UP OUR COAST AND COUNTRYSIDE
What a beautiful day for a trip to the beach and see what has washed in on the tide over the past couple of days. This is Blue Anchor Bay which is the nearest beach to where I live a mile inland. I often walk this section along to Dunster Beach which is where I started beachcombing as a child over 50 years ago. Back then, very little plastic was found on the beach although it was getting more popular with inflatable beach balls being given away with 4 gallons of petrol! Plastic bottles weren't around yet and buying bottled water was unheard of! It was usually a glass bottle of fizzy which, if someone decided to leave the empty behind, someone would soon pick it up and return it to a shop for the money back on it. A great way of getting some extra pocket money! Buckets and spades were still made of metal and wood which you took home and put away until the next beach visit.
Anyway, on with today's beach clean which I didn't have very much to collect although most of my hour was taken up picking up small pieces of white plastic which used to be the cheap white plastic cups which are a real nuisance. Being so thin, it's the fact that they break up very quickly which causes problems. Other items I collected today were 2 complete drinks cans which had not been in the sea for very long and the remains of 3 others which the paint had come off so could have been floating around for years. I never fail to find remains of tennis balls which again break down in the sea. I find the rubber centres which break in half but find lots of pieces of the plastic fibre covering. Many dog owners throw tennis balls for their dogs to retrieve but if lost, they innocently believe they won't do any harm floating around in the sea. I'm always warmed by the people who come up to me and thank me for what I'm doing and making the beach tidier and safer for everyone. Tomorrow, I'll be back at another local beach to see wahat I can find!
